Foot vs. Fashion: A choice that should be a no-brainer

All of us are simple human beings, there are not many things we strive for. We just want our wardrobe full of all the latest and on-trend shoes to match all our needs. We get one look at the models walking on the runway with beautiful high heels, and we are rushing to the stores for a fresh pair.

But what we miss is that those models wear those shoes for that limited runway moment and not as something for everyday life. We definitely don’t need heels for the lifestyle we have. Those shoes are meant to be admired from afar and not be worn during office days or even in our daily lives.

“Feet which contribute to 52 bones and 66 joints of the body have been neglected as part of the lower limb.”

Does my foot actually affect my health?

YES! IT TOTALLY DOES.

Due to a sedentary lifestyle, people have reduced to almost never walking leave alone walking bare feet on a raw surface. In children, balance has become an issue. Thanks to pointed shoes and loafers, the cases of deformities like Bunions have gone high.

“49 percent of Indians experience serious foot problems at least once in their lifetime.”

In running, pressure on the feet can be 4 times of the runner’s body weight. Conditions like plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, swollen and feet, recurrent ankle sprains have become so common these days. Even in children the lack of physical activities and uncomfortable shoes for teenagers caused issues like ligament tears, ankle sprains, calf pains, and even lower back aches.

What does my choice of shoes have to do with my health?

The culture of “Fashion over comfort” is constantly on the rise, and we have forgotten the importance of choosing the right shoes. And nowadays big brands have started to take advantage of this situation by launching different types of shoes that provide comfort. But do we really need those shoes?

Let’s talk about the talk of shoe-town these days, “arch-support shoes”. Arch support is devices placed into your shoes to support the arch of your foot.

However, in reality, you shouldn't be required to "support" your feet. Due to severe foot deformity or chronic dysfunction, some persons actually require structural foot reinforcement. However, the majority of people shouldn't be wearing extra support on their feet.

Your feet's muscles support you when you stand up. Although many individuals worry that their arch may collapse, your foot's muscles hold the arch erect.

So many types of shoe designs give the false sense that they are good for our feet when they are not. For example here are some of the shoes you should steer clear of despite how cute they may be.

1.     High Heels increase the risk of ankle sprains

2.     Avoid stilettoes at all costs, they are the riskiest due to a major lack of support.

3.     Pencil heels have also increased the cases of ligament tears

4.     Stiff and hard shoes doesn’t allow movement at the joints of foot.

5.     Pointed shoes leads to Bunion formation.

If you continue to wear non-supportive footwear, you run the risk of bunions. Your big toes' bony bunions can develop as a result of problems with your shoes. Heels are usually the culprit. So it's important to wear supportive footwear.
